This project was fortunate to establish a Demonstration Site of Technology for Rangelands Management at Roebuck Plains Station, located 40 km out of Broome in the Kimberley. In collaboration with the Nyamba Buru Yawuru (NBY) station owners, the project showcased and trialed various technologies which complemented station operations and technologies already in use on the station. Technology introduced through the project included mapping and GPS tools to assist management, operational efficiencies, and safety. Satellite pasture monitoring along with ground truthing via an app to inform pasture, grazing and fire management. A tank level monitoring products along with a camera and remote rain gauges. As well as mobile satellite internet and GPS cattle tracking tags.
The project culminated in a well-attended field day, in collaboration with the Australian Rangelands Society Conference, in September 2023 at Roebuck Plains Station. Attendees gained an understanding of NBY’s people, cultural values, cattle production, and land management strategies and how being a part of the demonstration project supported them in achieving their goals. Attendees learned of the technology being trialed and of current opportunities for technology to support rangelands management. Out in the paddock visitors received a smoking ceremony before entering a culturally significant wetland to learn about how it was being protected. An interactive field walk ignited observation and discussion. The walk was led by Alejandro Carillo, Mexican Regenerative Rancher, who also shared perspectives of international rangelands management.
This project was a part of a national collaborative Australian Hubs project using technology for Managing Rangelands for Drought Resilience. The project was led by the KPCA with support from the Northern Hub through funding from the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund.
